Thats really awesome!!! I was born at Luke Air Force Base out there and havent been back since 1978. I have been wanting to go back for a long time now.
Its amazing all the critters that can be found out in the desert like that.

Thanks everyone! Mike, Elizabeth, and I enjoyed looking at these together!
Mike took a few and as soon as I can figure out how to upload the pics I will do so! the problem I have is that I don't know how to adjust them so that the files aren't too big. I'll work on it though!
Thanks again!
Oh, and yes, Christian, I was very proud of Mike!

You haven't seen the desert yet ??? It is the most amazing place to be. Just watch where you step and enjoy the incredible variety of critters. I wish I could be out there more often....

Great pictures! thank you so much for sharing. I wish that I could have been there. Next year maybe.
Were the tarantula burrows in flat areas? The A.iodium seem to have an affinity for sloped areas.
Some of those wolf spiders look like Hogna carolinensis. Especially the male found wnadering on the road.

Lindsey,
You need to throw that picture of your A. chalcodes up in the Gallery. That is a really beautiful spider!

That's what I think they are too, but it is confusing how different the carolinensis from out west look compared to the carolinensis from around here. The spider in my avatar is a carolinensis from eastern VA. I am unclear of the finer points of their taxonomy and have been meaning to research that a little deeper. Thanks! Thing is..that was taken in a dimly lit room with flash that washed her coloring out somewhat! She's actually prettier than that:eek: Hoping to get her outside for a natural light photo this weekend to capture some of the more subtle points. She is remarkable.

I adjusted the white balance. Helped that that one was particularly patient. Most gave me about two seconds to get a photo:) . Luckily there were approximately a gagillion of them scampering about so there were plenty of photo ops. Wish I had seen some courtship:( .

Edit: Just realized I forgot my only pectine photo. Really wonderful to watch these guys continuing to do their thing, regardless of the giant towering above and flashing lights on them!

Thanks for posting those, Martin. We were actually also able to get a copy of the whole interview f so my parents were able to see it. She had a lot of fun with that. She loves when she can tell the world about spiders!
