Hi all,

Since I transferred her to a new enclosure my juvie Eucratosceles pachypus female refuses to burrow. I've started several for her but she just fills them in, preferring instead to cling to the inside of the lid of the kritter keeper. I've even provided a hide but have yet to see her use it. I don't want her to get too stressed out, any suggestions on how to get this little lady to dig? Thanks!

maybe give her a few days to get adjusted. leave the hide and whatever you have in there, and i would just leave her be. eventually she will...you know finicky Ts can be about things and their environment. i just redid my burrowers tank and she was clinging to the side of her tank for 24 hours, then was like "OH. theres IS a hole" lol.

Thanks Nikki! I should have mentioned that it's been a week since I transferred her. There's been a development in this story though - I woke up this morning to find that she's started a nice little burrow. Guess she wanted me to start a thread for her so she'd get attention.

lol. good for her! see, just a lil finicky T thing. lol. now you have your pet hole back. hehehehehe....i love my burrower too. shes a mean lil thing but so cool. lol.

Maybe you just have an attention seeking odd ball. I have an obligate burrower that has spent most of two years I have had it on the surface or clinging to the side of its container. When I open the top it even stays there unless I chase it down the burrow. Look on the bright side. It is not a pet hole yet.

Really no need to be concerned I had a Pachypus and it never burrowed just took homage in a hide I put in there.

Have to say they are a cracking specie I missed out on buying a Constrictus recently grr!

Mine hasn't burrowed since I bought her about 9 months ago! She prefers her cork round and has never shown any interest in the starter burrows I've made for her. : /

JenJen, I've been told that this species likes it dry...maybe the substrate was still too damp at first? Just a thought...

Thanks for the input Hentzi and lagomorphette! This tale has a happy ending, as she has constructed quite the burrow and only surfaces at night to look for snacks now.

Yes they do like it very dry, and I certainly would not grumble if it had taken up a supplied hide wish mine did that, tell you what I have not seen mine for weeks its does come out for a quick nose about during the evening but all you see during the day is a pot of dirt and maybe some big fluffy legs blocking the entrance, but that does not bother me at all as long as it is happy then so am I.

That's very true, Hentzi--it is great that she's visible most of the time. She has webbed up the inside of her cork round to her liking and spends nearly all her time there. My only concern was whether or not she was content if she didn't burrow. She mostly seems like it, but you've gotta wonder, ya know? I bought her from someone on a different list around a year ago, and she hasn't shed and rarely eats (but maintains a healthy-looking abdomen). Apparently she burrowed while in their care, so I expected her to do the same. Not the case, clearly! : )

Anyone have any idea of the life expectancy for this species?
