Hello, sorry to make another post so soon. But I wanted to know, what is the most relaxed in terms of temperament? Avicularia genus. :) I guess a better question would be, what are the characteristics of the different kinds of avics that make them, them? Also, what is the most active of the avicularia? Unrelated to most docile. Unless of course there is a docile active avic. Keep in mind, I am a beginner. I've done lots of homework and I'm ready to rock. My cage should be up very soon, I just needs to drill holes in it for ventilation. Anyway, I was wondering what your opinions are?

I'm in a crisis and I have 36 hours to decide before I must buy. This entire time I thought I wanted an avic avic, but I want to see if it really is the best fit for me. I know I want an avic, definitely an avic. I just don't know what species right now. I'm new and I'd like to handle it from time to time but not frequently, maybe a couple times a year if that.

I don't know about "all" the Avics (and with the standard "different personalities" disclaimer), but I can tell you about what I've noticed about our brood.

Avicularia avicularia: one of the most laid-back of the bunch, and generally the slowest-moving unless startled;
Avicularia diversipes: probably the "Nervous Nelly" of the bunch, a little bit high-strung and prone to hiding;
Avicularia huriana: Halo's my little sweetie - also kind of prone to staying in her hide, but when we moved her from pill bottle to acrylic box, we had a wee bit of a problem. Instead of going into the box, she came out of the pill bottle and onto my hand. Walked around a little bit as if investigating, and then decided that she was comfy and didn't want to leave! :lol:
Avicularia versicolor: we've got two, and they're both pretty much middle-of-the-road, between A. diversipes and A. avicularia. One of them will come out and take a short walk on my hand (although I think she'd like to walk a lot further than that), the other one is more of a "touch-me-not", and doesn't care to be bothered all that much.

So in all honesty, I haven't noticed "that" much of a personality difference between our Avics, other than the hiding and "leave me alone" differences, which could just as easily be explained as being scared of that big, noisy monster who comes by and shoves crickets in the boxes, or spritzes water in their homes.

Short answer is, we've only got one tarantula whose personality has been "by the book". Get whatever kind you want, and their personality will grow on you! :D

I definitely think avic avic is my choice then. I did my own research while waiting for responses and everything I've read has confirmed my decision and after reading what you posted, it only added to my confirmation. Lee, thank you very much for your input. I'll post pics should I be able to find one this weekend.

My Avic avics are definitely the most laid back of my pink toes.

Whitechapel, my pleasure! As I said, that was just my experience based on our (rather small) cross-sampling of Avics, and we're pretty much newbies too. There's many more people who are vastly more experienced that we are, but in all honesty, I don't think you could go wrong with an A. avicularia. Also, when we got ours <insert plug for the 2012 ATS convention here>, they were all pretty much the same size (read: tiny). Now Ari (the avicularia) is the largest of the brood, easily! Can't explain it, but it is certainly noticeable.

btw, did I remember to welcome you to the Forum? I've slept since then..... If I hadn't, welcome!! :D

I got a pink toe today! It is a female. And she is under a year old. She's in her case she was sold in in my closet in my room for now. The good news is that she is large enough for the current cage I have too. I even verified this with the sales woman, who was very, very knowledgeable. She answered ALL of my questions. But I pulled out the power of DROID and showed her the exact cage I had. She complimented me on it and said it would be just fine for it. I want to verify with you guys too, but she is much bigger than my first pink toe. But since it was so young I decided it would be better. I will post pics later on or tomorrow. I just want to relax. I'm also very excited to know I have a female. I did indeed name her Marla.

Thanks for the welcome :)

Now that I think about it, that's perfect...
