Hi all!

The transition from the yahoo list to this message board system has opened many ways for sharing info...and pics:) . For those of you not accustomed to posting photos in this type of format here is some help. (It is way more convenient for both the poster and the viewer than the list!)

An easy way to post here is to use a hosting site (Photo Bucket, ImageShack, etc.) I've recently started using ImageShack and love it, so here is a quick rundown on how that works:

When posting a pick, it is usually helpful to have a hosting site window and a ATSHQ window running simultaneously.

Go to http://www.imageshack.us/ Read through the Terms of Service etc. You do not have to register, but registration is free and all you need is your email address. There is no limit to the numbers of photos you can have hosted. Once you have an account, you can view and use your images by logging in. To upload, click on the yellow frog to get to the intro upload page. From there, you have several options. I usually choose to not resize unless a certain file is gigantic (they do have a size limit, but it is pretty darn generous). If everything looks good to you, click "Browse" and choose a photo. Once you have selected it, click "Host it!" and ImageShack will begin uploading. When it is done, it will take you to a thumbnail of your image and a myriad of different posting URLs. For use here, I use the option that says "Thumbnail for forums". Once you have it highlighted, simply copy and paste it into your text and you're all done.

*EDIT* *** The thumbnail obtion is great if you do not feel like/have to time for resizing. For gallery pics or other pics you want embedded full size I find it easiest to resize them before uploading them to ImageShack. I usually try to keep it below 600x600 pixels. In that case, you copy/paste the URL that says "Embeddable codes: Forums" ***

You will end up with a clickable thumbnail like this. (B. albopilosum molting BTW)

I tried http://www.imageshack.us/ first but last night I tried photobucket and that worked a lot easier for me to post pics. just for more info for the next new member!!:D

OK I am trying to use Photobucket. I got the part of how to paste the info per Rhys directions but when ever I try to up load to forum, I get "invalid file" even when using "tiny" on sizing and the photo uploaded from my computer was already with in the size limits for the forum.???

The reason for using image hosting sites (like photobucket, etc.) is so that you don't have to upload any photos to this forum. You upload the photos to photobucket instead. Create photo albums on photobucket and just use the [img] tags from there to view the pics here in your posts. There may be size restrictions on photobucket as well. To get around that problem you may have to reduce the size of your photos before uploading them there.

Modern megapixel cameras create huge files. you can shoot at a lower resolution or use photo software to change/reduce the size of your photos prior to uploading. Also, the supported file types for images are: gif, jpg, jpeg, png, bmp.

OK, I will try to be more clear in my communications--challenge for me:rolleyes: and run this by you again.
Photos I get "invalid file" on are ones in Photobucket and I did use the [img] tags to get them to the forum. The photos I uploaded to Photobucket had been reduced to <95 kbs. So it must be operator error and I will work more on it. Hubby is fond of mentioning to me that computers do what you tell them too and not what you want them to do;) and I my mind is way to "creative" when it come to screwing up computers. lol

Can you use pictures uploaded in a gallery in another forum related to arachnids?

generally that would be considered leech linking, unless you have that forum's express permission to do so

basically you would be costing that forum/website bandwidth (from transfering the picture file to your computer) without really giving them their "due" of having someone have to click through them

generally, it is always ok to post a link to a picture, but you should only post an inline image (<img> or [img] tags) if you 1) own the rights to the picture and 2) have permission to post inline from that site

sites like photobucket (which i use... it is ok, but sometimes is really laggy) and imageshack expressly permit you to do inline posting of the images you store on there
